7- Of all the haunting moments of motherhood, few rank with hearing your own words come out of your daughter’s mouth.

We’re getting to that age. I see my mannerisms in hers. That look in her eye. The words coming out of her mouth. It’s different somehow than her brother. Easier to see myself in her…which is what worries me!

I’ve found myself just staring at her more recently. Wondering if this is what my mom saw when she looked at me. Wondering what’s going on in her head & who she’ll become. How does she see me? How will she remember me in this moment?

There’s no way I could’ve grasped this 7+ years ago when she was snuggled safely in my body, my husband & I afraid to take a breath, terrified that she’d be whisked away from us like the pregnancy before hers.

All those feelings, hopes, fears…all bundled up into these amazing, beautiful, feeling eyes…

And then she’ll say something that floors us; either with her comedic timing (impeccable, need to work on her content) or when her words are literally my own.

This is an entirely separate part of postpartum than grappling with your own changing body. It’s grappling with this actual person in front of you who you’ve nurtured, attempted to keep safe & prayed every damn day that they have the life they want & deserve.

8- Being a mom has made me so tired. And so HAPPY.

You don’t sleep when you’re a mom. That’s what everyone said. I’m an 8-10hr/night kinda girl so that scared me.

You make it work.

When my babies were born & we fed through the night, I just did it. I was tired (Lord was I tired), but I kept going.

My kids sleep (for the most part now), but I’m still tired. Not in the same acute way as when they were babies.

I’m tired because I worry for their lives in a pandemic, I worry about their happiness with limited contact with their friends/school & what that will mean for them.

I’m tired because I miss the carefree times. No matter how much I worry, they still smile, they still carry on.

We still have our snuggles, games & they still think I’m the best mom in the world.

And that I will never get tired of. (via @carriepagliano)

9- There will be so many times you feel like you’ve failed. But in the eyes, heart and mind of your child you are Super Mom.

Remember this today.

Whether you’re back in-person, virtual, hybrid, pre-school, day-care…I don’t think there’s a single one of us who don’t feel like we’re failing our kids in some way right now.

There’s simply not enough “mom” to go around & the clone machine is nowhere to be found.

Remember this today.

You.

Are.

Super Mom.

Period.

Godspeed to all the moms this week tackling school, child-care, work & partnering.

You may not feel like you got this in this moment, but you will.
